Ross Morgan is an Australian musician whose creative journey blurs the lines between art, literature, and music. A self-taught composer, Ross’s earliest memories are steeped in the gentle clatter of his parents’ pianola keys and the shimmering tones of an old electronic organ. By day, he is a fine artist and acclaimed picture book illustrator; by night, he becomes an architect of evocative sound, layering melodies that invite listeners into realms of nostalgia and imagination.

Music, for Ross, is not merely a pastime—it is a vital part of his creative process, fueling stories, characters, and entire visual worlds. Notably, his atmospheric composition “Glow” inspired a picture book published by Walker Books Australia in 2024, demonstrating how intimately his musical and visual art are entwined.

Ross’s sonic landscapes are best described as ambient and emotive, weaving together threads of soft grunge, 1980s pop instrumentals, and abstract lullabies. His work is characterised by warm, melancholic drones and playful, childlike motifs—soundtracks that oscillate between moments of shadow and light, much like the narratives he illustrates.

Each composition often begins with a handful of notes—simple, unadorned ideas that he explores through layering, harmony, and melody, building them into immersive soundscapes. Ross likens his approach to music to his approach to drawing: instinctive, playful, and exploratory. He “scribbles” with sound, following intuition rather than intention, searching for a melody or texture that resonates emotionally—a fleeting moment to be captured, refined, and treasured.

After nearly two decades of composing in private, Ross has only recently begun to share his music with the world. For him, music is a therapeutic pursuit, a safe space to process emotion and spark creativity. He hopes that what he cherishes in his compositions will also offer something meaningful to others—a shared sense of discovery, comfort, or inspiration.

Drawing inspiration from artists such as Air, Moby, Doves, Jon Hopkins, Nils Frahm, Ólafur Arnalds, as well as the iconic sounds of Radiohead, Sigur Rós, and Coldplay, Ross crafts music that is atmospheric yet grounded, experimental yet inviting. His compositions are a gentle invitation: step inside, listen closely, and perhaps find a piece of yourself within the echoes.
